Vicar's Blog

Our Vicar, the Rev David Houlton, publishes a monthly bulletin on his website,        A North Country Parson.

His monthly musings are also the leading article in our Parish magazine

By way of an introduction, David writes:

"Living in Gargrave is actually a bit of a home-coming for me; I was born in the East Riding, and family holidays were usually spent in North Yorkshire. Then I moved to West Yorkshire to study and met Heather, who is from 'down south', when she was studying languages. We did a lot of our courting in North Yorkshire, married in 1987, and settled down in urban West Yorkshire.

However, we were away for nearly 20 years. Before moving up to Gargrave, we lived in college accommodation while Heather completed her studies to become ordained too! Before that I was curate in urban Lancashire and Heather taught in a university. As a Yorkshireman ministering in Lancashire I was required to show some extreme Christian charity; I’ve even stayed overnight at the hotel of the Lancashire County Cricket Club!!

Before my theological training in Oxford, we lived and worked abroad for many years. I had worked in international businesses, and Heather taught in universities and colleges, but we had begun to discern a calling from God to serve Him in a different way. So we moved abroad for a job with a major global business and we got involved in a Church of England church in Belgium. In fact we ended up living and working in four countries, including a year in rural France, before we moved back to England for my theological training.

Heather became the Revd Heather at the end of June 2013 and was appointed curate in a group of neighbouring parishes. So, although we’ll be living in Gargrave Vicarage, she will be spending most of her time over in the next valley! So now I’m the new vicar of two lovely country parishes and although I’ll be out and about in rural North Yorkshire a couple of days a week as a part of my portfolio of posts, I will be spending most of my week in the parish."
